Sustainability

Fluid Solar was created out of a desire to bring renewable energy to the fundamental design philosophy of modern buildings. Since then, we’ve broadened our sustainability goals in several key ways.

1. Renewable energy

Many of our models use our patented technologies to offer inbuilt capacity to generate and store their own solar thermal energy, helping people achieve freedom from the grid. Fluid Solar House (our open office building and headquarters) was the world’s first solar-thermal-powered corporate building after its construction in 2017, and has functioned free from the grid since!

2. Energy-efficient design

The best way to reduce the impact of energy consumption is to consume less in the first place. We maximise sun, prioritise insulation and design our homes thermodynamically, to help you use less energy on lighting, heating and cooling your home–the largest slice of a typical electricity bill.

3. Sourcing locally

We obtain all our building materials locally where possible–most of them from within the same suburb using neighbouring, locally-owned companies. This hugely reduces transportation emissions (the “carbon miles”) of our buildings, and means our production process keeps in accordance with Australian waste disposal legislation.

4. Low site impact

Our models can be installed with much less concrete than typical housing foundations, reducing the impact on the ecosystem surrounding a build site. As the modules are pre-built, there is also reduced trade foot traffic, and a hugely reduced chance of building rubbish polluting the surrounding environment. Additionally, our houses can be easily elevated on steel stilts, making them suitable for sloping environments or areas prone to flooding, and reducing the need for excavation of the natural landscape.

4. Flexible function

Modular design means your building can grow with your family and your space requirements, or change function over time. It is vastly less impactful to alter an existing building than to demolish and rebuild.
